WHAT IS HARD WATER ?


Water is designated as "hard" when it contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, such as calcium and magnesium. The term hardness was originally applied to water that was hard to wash in, referring to the soap wasting properties of hard water. Hardness prevents soap from lathering by causing the development of an insoluble curdy precipitate in the water.

HOW WATER GETS HARD?


The principal natural sources of hardness in water are dissolved polyvalent metallic ions from sedimentary rocks, seepage and runoff from soils. Calcium and magnesium, the two principal ions, are present in many sedimentary rocks, the most common being limestone and chalk. Calcium and magnesium are the two prominent minerals responsible for the hardness of water.
